The Municipal Art Society of New York (MAS) will once again present the annual Tribute In Light to honor the victims of the September 11 World Trade Center attacks. The majestic twin blue beams will illuminate the lower Manhattan sky beginning at dusk on Saturday, September 11, and fading with the dawnae a world-renowned symbol to honor the victims of the attacks as well as those who worked tirelessly to help the city deal with its greatest trial.
The "Tribute in Light" will return for one night as a tribute to all those who were lost on September 11th. The lights are located at West and Morris Streets in Lower Manhattan. The lights will be on for one night on September 11, 2010, beginning at sunset and fading away at dawn on September 12th. The lights are best seen when it is completely dark; sunset is expected to occur at 7:11 pm that night and sunrise is expected to occur at 6:33 am on the morning of September 12th.
“Tribute In Light is one of the most poignant reminders of the tremendous losses we suffered on that day, as well as the resilience we as a city displayed in the aftermath of September 11,” said MAS President Vin Cipolla.
Comprising 44 7,000-watt xenon light bulbs, arranged into two 48-foot squares that echo the shape and orientation of the Twin Towers, Tribute In Light is assembled each year on a roof near the World Trade Center site. The illuminated memorial reaches four miles into the sky and is visible from as far as 30 miles away. The two arrays cast the strongest shaft of light ever projected from Earth into the night sky.
Tribute In Light was first presented on April 11, 2002 – six months after the attacks – and has been presented annually thereafter. As in previous years, MAS is working with the New York City Audubon Society to ensure the Tribute does not affect migrating birds.
