Green Shores NYC is partnering with the Trust for Public Land to produce a community-driven vision for the Astoria/Long Island City waterfront.
This summer, they are holding a series of Listening Sessions in neighborhoods throughout Astoria and Long Island City, Queens. In the fall, two more Community Workshops will focus on specific issues and ideas for the future!
AT THE WORKSHOPS:
Community members will have a chance to talk about how they use the waterfront now, which areas they like and where improvements are desired. Workshops will cover the area from Newtown Creek in the South to Bowery Bay in the North and include the entire stretch of East River waterfront in Queens.
WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE WORKSHOPS?
Green Shores partner for the process is the Trust for Public Land, a national non-profit dedicated to preserving open space. Urban planners from Jonathan Rose Companies will help design the workshops and draft the final plan.
At the end of the process, they will produce a handout/plan/brochure and online report showing the community's recommendations.
WHY DO WE NEED IT NOW?
Long Island City and Astoria have undergone tremendous changes in the past few years. More changes are planned for the future.
The waterfront has some wonderful parks and some areas that have been cut off from public access. Many sites on the waterfront are disconnected and hard to reach from inland neighborhoods. This plan will give community members a chance to weigh in on the future of our waterfront.
